The origins of laid paper date back to the pre-industrial era of paper manufacturing, between the 12th and 19th centuries. It was produced using a wire mesh wrapped around a cylinder that, when pressing the paper pulp, created the distinctive pattern of parallel lines on the paper’s surface.

This pattern of transverse parallel lines was known as "laid" (verjurado), a term possibly derived from French or Catalan.

Nowadays, laid paper is no longer handmade, but the original process is replicated using a special watermark during the pressing and production of paper envelopes.

Because it required more effort to produce than regular paper, laid paper was historically associated with high quality, luxury, and elegance, making it more expensive than conventional paper.
